The “Scoop” about your Powerhouse
When we talk about the powerhouse in Pilates, we’re talking about the very center of you—your body’s command center. It lives in that space between the bottom of your ribs and your hips, and it includes your abdominals, spinal muscles, diaphragm, and pelvic floor.
But I don’t want you to just think of it as a group of muscles—I want you to think of it as something alive. Almost like an organ.
It needs energy.
It needs breath.
It needs circulation.
It needs attention.
And when it’s working well? Everything else works better too.
Your powerhouse is what stabilizes you, supports you, and initiates movement. It’s what allows you to move without collapsing, gripping, or straining. Every time you move in Pilates, ideally, it starts from this center and flows outward.
Here’s something I love: your body is wired for this. Before you even move, your deep stabilizing muscles quietly switch on—your multifidus, your transverse abdominis (your TA), and your pelvic floor—all working together to create support from the inside out.
But life, injuries, habits… they can interrupt that connection. That’s why we practice. We’re not just strengthening—we’re relearning how to use the body the way it was designed to move.
And when you reconnect to your center physically, something else happens too—you feel more centered mentally. Strong in a quieter, steadier way.
Let’s Talk About “The Scoop”
One of the first skills we build is what we call the scoop.
Think of it as gently drawing your abdominals in toward your spine and lifting them up under your ribs. It’s supportive, not forceful.
It’s not sucking in.
It’s not gripping.
It’s a lift.
Like your center is hugging your spine and holding you up from the inside.
Your abdominals aren’t meant to be static—they’re alive. Always subtly working, deepening, lengthening, responding to your breath.
Cues You’ll Hear Me Say (Probably On Repeat 😉)
Abs lifting in and up
Scoop and hollow
Anchor your spine—long and strong
Belly in, not out
These aren’t just words—they’re your roadmap back to your center.
